Difference Between Weld Map and Weld Log

A weld map is a visual drawing markup that shows weld locations and identifiers. A weld log is a tabular record that stores each weld's fabrication and inspection history.

In practice, teams use both together: the weld map helps field and shop teams locate welds, while the weld log supports QA traceability, reporting, and turnover documentation.

If your process has only one of these artifacts, gaps appear quickly. Maps without logs cannot prove welder/material/NDT history, and logs without maps are harder to validate against the drawing.
